Sherry was a practicing critical care and administrative RN for 39 years.
During her exciting, but often stressful nursing career, she developed,
managed or participated in several innovative critical care departments
and programs throughout northern Illinois. Sherry was able to relieve much
of that stress outdoors on their 10 acre property with her family, numerous
animals and gardens.
From childhood Sherry loved animals, the outdoors and working with her hands
to make original unique creations around her that she enjoyed. The fun was
in figuring out how to "make it work" mechanically, structurally,
practically and aesthetically, included building a pond and waterfall, screen
house, glass fountains, gardens and many other projects. She never thought
of herself as being artistic, but when she began working with stained and
fused glass in 1987, a whole new creative world opened for her. Because
working outdoors with plants and animals was so soothing and healing, she
began designing and making glass and copper garden accessories and fountains.
In 1999 Sherry was introduced to PMC in an Introductory class taught by
Linda Bernstein. Although she didn't realize it, this was to be the beginning
of a new career in art and teaching for Sherry. This material had almost
limitless possibilities, allowing her to combine elements of nature with
glass, silver and other materials.
Sherry became a Senior Instructor in 2003 and retired from nursing to teach
and create full time Nicknamed the "Queen of Green" by her fellow
Senior Instructors, Sherry continues to integrate the natural world with
her silver, glass and mixed media creations in both jewelry and small sculptures.
It is such a versatile medium that can be combined withother materials and shaped so easily without a lot of expensive tools.
Anything organic, including jewelry and small sculptures, Combining PMC with pottery and other media.
You can find Sherry teaching throughout Northern Illinois and Southern
Wisconsin at places like Klehm Arboretum, Rock Valley College, Shake Rag
Alley Center for the Arts, Olbrich Gardens (fall 2008), several shops and
galleries, and International Conferences throughout the US.
Her favorite place to teach is in her home studio in the country near Rockton,
Il., located on 5 acres of perennial gardens, hardwood and pine forest and
pasture where her students can relax, rejuvenate, learn and most importantly
have fun!
As an artisan and instructor, creating fine silver
or gold with glass, driftwood, leaves, pods and other materials to make unique
nature nspired jewelry and small structures gives me great pleasure, but teaching
and sharing brings me the most joy. I believe I left one healing profession
to join another one, for in creating and sharing we help heal not only ourselves
but others whose lives we are privileged to touch.
I wish to thank Linda Bernstein for all of her encouragement and sharing throughout
the years. She is a wonderful mentor and friend, without whom I wouldnft
be where I am today... I hope I have been able to inspire and encourage some
of my wonderful students as she inspired and encouraged me..
