Fine Silver Ring
- Lightly coat rubber mats, ring mold, Teflon sheet, roller and hands with badger balm.
- Condition by lightly kneading and compressing the clay into a smooth mass with a smooth surface. Roll into a slightly flattened ball.
- Place the clay on the desired area of the “Circulate” mat. Place two slats (six playing cards) on either side of clay and put the section of the “Bento Box” mat, that you want to use, upside down the clay out and remove from mats.
- Use large square cutter to cut out ring top.
- Handle carefully so as not to distort the pattern and keep the square shape. Tap the edges of the square to clean and compress and lay on a slightly curved surface to dry.
- Determine desired ring size and add two sizes to allow for shrinkage. Cut a piece of paper one layer thick to wrap around the ring mandrel. Tape the paper together, being careful not attach the paper to the mandrel. When the ring is dry this allows it to slip off easily.
- Roll out a clay “snake” and press into the clay mold. In the flat mold there are three different plain bands to choose from. Lightly coat the surface with water and scrape off excess with a steel scraper. Carefully remove clay from mold.
- Lay the clay ring around the mandrel, overlapping at the top. Make a v-shape cut through both pieces at the same time. Remove extra clay the extra clay on both the top and bottom layers. Join the v-joint with PMC3 Paste. Smooth the ring lightly with brush and water and let dry.
- Dry and clean both pieces. Smooth the edges of the square so that the ring will not be sharp while wearing. Sand a flat spot on the outside of the band where it was joined together. Wet both ring and center of square with a little water, apply PMC3 Paste and join the pieces together. Allow to dry and clean the joint.
- Insert a “Hattie’s Patties” into the center of the band and fire. The”Pattyie“ helps maintain proper size and fit. Note that rings withstand a lot of wear and tear. Maximum durability can be achieved by firing at at 1650 degrees for two hours.
- After firing, burnish with a steel brush, tumble and polish with a micro polishing pad.
